PART 2

“PART 2

The applause lasted longer than my father wanted.
I could tell by the way his jaw tightened.
When everyone finally sat, the installation commander smiled toward me.
“General Vale, thank you for coming.”
My father spoke before I could.
“She’s family.”
The commander looked at him.
“No, sir.”
The room changed.
“She’s here in an official capacity.”
My father went still.
The commander lifted a sealed folder.
“Brigadier General Sable Vale has been appointed to lead the independent review of intelligence procurement and classified access violations connected to Fort Halder.”
Penn stopped breathing.
My mother whispered,
“What review?”
I looked at my father.
He already knew.
That was why my name had been removed from the guest list.
For six months, my team had been tracing unauthorized intelligence queries through retired command credentials.
Someone had accessed deployment files.
Personnel records.
Protected source identities.
And restricted contractor databases.
One credential appeared more than any other.
Harlan Vale.
My father.
He stood abruptly.
“This is my retirement ceremony.”
“Yes,” I said.
“And after today, your rank no longer shields your records.”
Silence.
Then I placed the first document on the podium.
A series of payments from defense contractor Meridian Strategic Systems.
Consulting fees.
Advisory retainers.
Nearly four million dollars over eight years.
The recipient account belonged to Penn.
He shot to his feet.
“I didn’t know where that money came from.”
Father snapped,
“Sit down.”
That made everyone look at him.
I opened the next file.
Meridian had received classified logistical forecasts before bidding on military contracts.
Someone inside Fort Halder had been feeding them information.
The access logs showed my father’s credentials.
But the login device belonged to my mother.
Her face went white.
“You used my tablet,” Father said.
She shook her head.
“No.”
Then Penn whispered,
“Dad told us it was family business.”
The commander closed the auditorium doors.
Military investigators stepped inside.
My father stared at me.
“You came here to destroy me.”
“No.”
I reached for the final envelope.
“I came because someone tried to destroy me first.”
Inside was an old personnel action from nineteen years earlier.
A recommendation removing me from military intelligence training for “psychological instability.”
Signed by my father.
Except beneath it was an attached memo he had never known survived.
DO NOT REMOVE VALE.
SHE IDENTIFIED THE LEAK.
I looked at him.
“You didn’t erase me because you were ashamed of me.”
“You erased me because I found you.”
Then the back doors opened.
An elderly colonel entered using a cane.
My father’s face collapsed.
He whispered,
“Elias?”
Colonel Elias Mercer had supposedly died in Afghanistan eighteen years earlier.
He looked directly at my father.
Then at me.
And said,
“Tell your daughter why you signed my death certificate while I was still alive.”
